Markets & shopping

Leiden’s atmospheric setting has many unique shops, which makes it an excellent city for a shopping trip. Of course, you’ll find nearly all the national chain stores here, but it’s those individual, ‘special’ shops tucked away in the small streets and alleys of the historic city centre that make shopping such fun. And, of course, the good service, friendly staff and attention to quality.

Especially our neighbourhood, the Pieterskwartier, is the perfect area for a relaxing stroll through the charming alleys and taking in the courtyards of the authentic Leiden almshouses. Here you’ll find all those special shops that are unique to Leiden. You can look, choose and buy at any of the charming antique shops, well-stocked bookstores, stylish clothes shops, boutiques delicatessens, gift shops and galleries.

Street market

Take a relaxing stroll along the stalls and experience a different kind of shopping: here you will find exotic spices, clothing, vegetables, fish, fruit, flowers, clothes and delicacies from all corners of the world... Almost everything you can imagine can all be found at Leiden’s street market. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the stalls of this bustling market line the Botermarkt, the Vismarkt, the Aalmarkt and the Nieuwe Rijn, adding an extra touch of local and foreign colour to shopping in Leiden. There’s a wide choice; you are welcome to come and see for yourself!
